September 17th, 2010

Less than 7 weeks until I head back to Haiti.  This will be my 5th trip to Haiti as a volunteer with Team Canada Healing Hands, and my 2nd trip since the earthquake that took place on January 12th, 2010.

This time will be especially exciting for me as I will be leading my first team to Haiti. A group of 12 health care professionals will be heading to Haiti November 3rd and returning November 17th.  We will be splitting up once there, with a group going to Ile-à-Vache and Jacmel, a small group staying in Port-au-Prince and another group - location to be determined.

While there, as with all trips with TCHH, we will be providing care as well as education to patients as well as training Haitians to be their own health care providers, thus fostering a sustainable rehabilitation service.

I'm very much looking forward to being back in Haiti - a country that has "gotten to me" on a level that is difficult to describe.  Haiti is a place where resiliency is in the fabric of every being.  Despite the struggles that Haitians face, they are a very strong and proud people.  With richness in culture, music, food and kindness that we would be so fortunate to have.  Not to mention the beauty of the country that is all too often overshadowed by the devastation.  The beaches and hospitality are so amazing!!!

I cannot wait to see my Haitian friends...Ayiti cheri, tu me manques.
